Week 3 Analysis: Business & Audiovisual Media

The Apple & Full Sail University video on YouTube tells the story of how the pairing of high tech and a modern approach to a creative education makes for an impressing learning program at Full Sail University. The audience hears from various members of the leadership team at the school what kind of impact having best in class technology has for students as well as educators on campus. The story the video tells is very clear; by partnering with Apple Inc. Full Sail University is able to offer it’s students a technological advantage when it comes to learning the creative arts. One of the greatest fears new students have when entering a higher learning program is whether or not what they are about to dedicate 4 or more years to studying will be obsolete by the time they graduate. This is especially true in the creative arts where mediums and technology can change almost overnight. This video does a great job of communicating to perspective students that by studying at Full Sail University, they can trust that the tools the learn and technology they will be using will aid them well in their careers beyond graduation.

When you watch the Dollar Shave Club video announcing their new butt wipe product, it’s hard at first to find a story because it’s simply too funny of a video. It’s distracting. It pokes fun at itself. It pokes fun at the audience, and that’s part of the story and part of the fun of this announcement video. Upon rewatch, the story is simple; use Dollar Shave Clubs’ new One Wipe Charlie product to save effort and time cleaning up after yourself in the bathroom. With its clever use of quick cuts, strong – and funny – imagery, and strong language that the audience is not accustomed to hearing in a commercial, the video does a great job of capturing the viewers attention and interest.

The announcement video for the new galleries and updated building was a unexpected and fun way to invite patrons to visit the space. By creating a lip dub set to the song “Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” the video challenges the viewer to accept their invitation to check out the space that they literally, have not seen until now. Combatting the stereotype that scientists are introverted, quiet, and tragically unhip – the video has several staff members and volunteers lip-syncing to the song while showing off some of the updates to the galleries and buildings they want the public to come and check out. It’s colorful, up-beat, and fun to watch. It makes the viewer want to tap their toes while paying close attention to the spaces that the various people occupy and makes you want to join in on the fun.
