DVA: RISE Peer Feedback

I watched this video by Nicole K. several times, and what struck me the most was how it affected me emotionally. Between the music and what the subject Nicole shared, it was obvious how much truth and honesty she was sharing with the viewer. In just a few seconds, I could see how personal the story Robin was sharing was, and it immediately made me think about my mother and what lessons she’d want to share with me. I want to make sure that the same type of honest and connection with the subject comes through in my video as well.

I wonder if the author, Nicole K. intended for such raw emotion and sense of sadness and hope to come through in this video. Did you mean for this to be what was captured and share, or did it naturally evolve from the taping session? I think that the resulting profile, of a loving, concerned mother who misses her own mother is a powerful profile…one that will resonate with many of the video’s viewers.

I also wonder if the author considered using any image stabilization on the section of video where Robin becomes emotional herself. It’s a powerful moment that the camera jitter that exists in the clip diminishes slightly. The author should consider doing so to allow the moment to be truly impactful for the viewer.

It may be possible to have the entirety of the video profile flow seamlessly by making all of the still images take up the full frame and allow the viewer to “travel” across them by using a pan and scan effect. In this way the stark contrast between the moving video and small photos surrounded by blackness would disappear, and create a completely enveloping experience for the viewer. It would allow them to simply focus on Robin and her story…to be lost in the moment more easily.
